"Design and Construction of the Fulton Road Precast Deck Arch Bridge"

For over 20 years, a unique cast-in- place concrete open-spandrel deck arch bridge carried local traffic 100' above the Metroparks Zoo near downtown Cleveland, OH. Significant deterioration due to severe winter exposure necessitated the replacement of the old Fulton Road Bridge with a new precast arch structure that replicates the look of the old bridge and promises better durability and performance using contemporary precast segmental concrete technology. The new structure, currently under construction, will consist of six 210' spans using precast, post-tensioned arch rib segments transported to the site, erected on temporary towers, and post-tensioned. This presentation will discuss issues related to the bridge type selection, unique aspects of the design of the new structure, demolition of the old Fulton Road Bridge, and the ongoing construction of the new bridge.
